Essential oils are pure plant extracts. High quality oils (the only ones you should be using) are extremely powerful, potent forms of support that should be respected as the medicine they are.
[Before I get too far into this particular post, I'd like to say that I am not affiliated which any particular brand of essential oils. I used to work with one of the top MLM companies, but I have recently cut ties with them completely. I get my oils from a few different sources and I do my own independent research to determine the quality and decide if using them feels right. I know what to expect from quality oils so I feel comfortable and confident in my approach. If you would like to know more, my process is part of what I teach in my courses!]
Depending on the plant, the oils are extracted either by cold press or steam distillation, and can come from seeds, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, resin, roots, fruit, etc. Each part of the plant creates a different oil that can vary in benefits and properties.
When in their purest form, essential oils can be used topically, aromatically, and internally. Topically refers to being applied to skin in a carrier oil at a specific dilution ratio. Aromatic use is smelling them directly from the bottle or from a diffuser. Internal use is when the oil in consumed in either food, drink, or capsule. I go into much more depth on each of these topics (as well as dilution and carrier oils) in separate blog posts, find them by clicking the topic of interest.
As with all herbal remedies, plants are much less of a "quick fix" and should be used more often and at gentler potencies for the best, most supportive health effects. Things like teas, tinctures, and essential oils are best used a little bit at a time throughout your day, every day as a part of your healthy lifestyle.
OTC cleaners, products, and personal care items are loaded with synthetic perfumes and dyes that overload our body's ability to filter. Oftentimes these synthetics are toxic and/or endocrine disruptors that wreak havoc on our immune and hormone systems, feeding illness and unrest in the body. The human body can take a LOT, but it also has an intrinsic ability to heal itself. Stopping the use of synthetics for this natural alternative can have really amazing results relatively quickly!
